Announcing our 2013 intersession location

With the start of the 2012-13 school year rapidly approaching, members of our administration and faculty have made their way down to Buenos Aires, Argentina to prepare for the sea of new faces into our fold. Now entering our third academic year, THINK Global School continues its cycle of evolution with the addition of our new Head of School Alun Cooper, nine new faculty and on-site staff members, and fourteen new students. This adds up to our largest and most diverse community to date.

It is not just the personalities and host cities experiencing change this year, as 2012-13 also marks the introduction of an intersession into our academic calendar. The intersession will serve as a two week mini-term in January and will provide the students with an opportunity to fully experience a unique location during that duration. Given the rigors associated with the IB curriculum, the intersession will provide a much-needed respite purely focused on cultural immersion and exploration.

So where will this intersession take place? We are pleased to announce that our inaugural intersession will occur in one of the happiest places on earth: Bhutan. A small, landlocked country steeped in forests and tradition, Bhutan is also the birthplace and home of three of our students. This intimacy with the location will allow our resident students to share their knowledge with both faculty and classmates alike, providing a unique complement to our tour operator.

The goal of our 2012-13 intersession is to introduce our students to Bhutan’s unique and innovative approach to planning the next stages of global development using the four pillars of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as organizing principles. Those four pillars are:

  • Environmental Conservation
  • Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Values
  • Good Governance
  • Sustainable Economic Development

Bearing this in mind, our tour operator will guide the students and staff on an experiential journey through the Himalayan mountains and valleys that cover Bhutan, as well as familiarizing them with the sprawling Buddhist monasteries, population, and customs of the country’s capital city, Thimhpu.

Interested in learning more about this fascinating (and largely unheard of) country? Nick Berkte put together this wonderful video from his time in Bhutan, which places the country’s convivial people and Buddhist traditions on full display. Nick is also known as Pogo, an electronic musician that uses sounds from film and life to create an original song.
