Berlin

2011-2012 Term 3

A cultural illumination, Berlin has become a world leader in science, technology, commerce, philosophy, architecture and the arts. At every turn there’s an opportunity to touch history, observe how mankind is able to overcome and triumph the most harrowing obstacles, and share these observations online with the world.

Students could find themselves discussing tolerance while walking through the stark and moving Holocaust Memorial, or debating politics and policy while peering down on Parliament in the iconic glass-domed Reichstag. Students will likely spend their time hypothesizing, in a round-table classroom discussion, where the world would be without X-rays, aspirin, nuclear fission, or gummy bears- all of which are German innovations.

Facts about Berlin

  • Capital city of Germany
  • Berlin is Germany's most multi-cultural city, with over 470,000 residents with foreign passports
  • Hundreds of miles worth of underground tunnels remain from the Nazi era
  • The only city in the world with three active opera houses
  • Contains over 1,700 bridges

Berlin Brandenburg International School

bbis.de

The four red brick buildings of Berlin Brandenburg International School (BBIS) are located midway between Berlin (17km) and Potsdam (20km) in Kleinmachnow. Adjacent to a number of picturesque lakes and historical castles and churches, the city was once surrounded on three sides by the Berlin Wall.

With an emphasis on the educational value of free inquiry, BBIS is the first school in the entire world authorized to teach all four stages of the IB Program, running from ages 3 to 19. The school has both boarding and day students, and all classes are taught in English. The school’s culture emphasizes caring, compassion and inclusion, values entirely consistent with those of THINK Global School.
