China

Exploration and imagination along the Great Wall and beyond

From Peking Man to Peking Duck, from emperors to entrepreneurs, from jade jewelry to green technology, few cities are evolving as rapidly and dramatically as Beijing. THINK Global School added our own brand of forward-thinking to the mix with a term spent studying alongside our new friends at host school Beijing BISS International School, an independent day school nestled in the heart of cosmopolitan Beijing.

Having sat out the Industrial Revolution, the world’s largest capital city is making up for lost time, achieving in fifteen years what it took the West one hundred and fifty to accomplish. Now home to more iPhone application developers than anywhere else in the world, Beijing is a metamorphic metropolis that introduced our students to the rising stars of innovation and challenged them to keep up with the city’s frantic pace – all while learning the Mandarin language!

During our term in China we toured the Great Wall with scholarly expert and National Geographic Channel host William Lindsay. On what was surely one of the most exciting (and aerobic) lessons we’ve ever had in our global studies course, we explored how the wall was constructed, the way it factored into Qin dynasty military strategy, the archaeological sites along its perimeter, and the conservation issues facing the “wild” sections of the wall that have been reclaimed by the surrounding forest.
