Peru

Cultural treasures abound in this archaeological paradise

At the start of our 2016 Peru term, while nestled high above the Urubamba Valley, we had the privilege of joining Q’ero shamans in a despacho (offering) ceremony to the Pachamama (Mother Earth). During this sacred rite, the shamans welcomed the Pachamama to guide and take care of us on our Peruvian journey by showering us with blessings. It was our first taste of Peru’s sophisticated cultures and traditions, and as powerful as the Andean coffee we came to love.

Our time in Peru was split between the Sacred Valley and the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco, and we developed a deep affection for the communal way of life enjoyed by the residents of Peru’s highland region. By teaming with the non-profit Llama Pack, we were able to work with Urubamban youth, creating local crafts together and providing them with basic lessons on cleanliness, oral hygiene, and female reproduction.

In perhaps the highlight of our term, we spent a week hiking along the Inca Trail, where we marveled at incredible Incan architecture and spoke with Quechuan villagers about their indigenous culture and what they considered the positive effects of globalization. You can find a mini-documentary on the Inca Trek created by TGS student Jessica M. below.
