Growth and change in one of India’s fastest-growing cities

What better place for intellectual and emotional development than one of the fastest-growing cities in one of the most rapidly developing nations in the world? In the fall of 2013, THINK Global School headed to Hyderabad, where host school the Indus International School welcomed us with open arms.

Both in class and through day-to-day encounters, students had the chance to learn about Hinduism in relation to world religions, Gandhi and the culture of non-violent resistance, and the day-to-day effects of rapid economic growth. After two months of study and immersion in Hyderabad’s colorful culture, including building schools and teaching children in nearby Kondikal Tanda, we traveled north for to witness the flag-lowering ceremony at the India-Pakistan border, visit Delhi and learn about its dying professions, take in the Taj Mahal, and more. Our first Choose Your Own WeXplore Adventure let students select from excursions ranging from Kashmir to Calcutta to Goa, allowing them to take charge of their education and experience the destination of their choice in an intimate group of their peers.

Madeline S.

on her favorite India experience:

On the Kashmir trip, we stayed aboard this houseboat on Nagin Lake. It was completely still except for the occasional ripples from shikara boats. The sky was perfectly reflected, and you couldn’t tell where the horizon line started and stopped on the water.

We woke up really early to go to this floating market, and it was super cold because it was November. We got underneath these blankets and it was completely dark. They paddled us out to the middle of the lake, and suddenly we started hearing these calls from every side of the lake reverberating all around us. We could see lights from fires close to the mosques. It was this surreal moment because there was this cacophony of sound from nothing we could see and we were floating in nothingness. It was really moving, and my first personal encounter with Islam.
