Exploring the various phases of mitotic cell division
In a recent science class, students were asked to explore the process of mitotic cell division by modeling and explaining the various phases: interphase and chromosome replication, prophase, pro-metaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis.
The supplies for the day’s activity included ribbon for cell membranes and spindle fibers. Forks, knives and spoons served as chromosomes.
Participating in this activity gave students the opportunity to learn about cells by modeling the process themselves. They also had to explain each stage of mitosis to their classmates, which helped them gain a better understanding of how cells divide.
