The Galapagos as the TGS Classroom
Visiting the Galapagos is a lifetime dream for many around the world. TGS students began the month of October by flying – with permanent smiles and cameras prepped – to the Galapagos islands for two weeks of studies and experiential learning. Spending one week on the island of San Cristobál, classes took place on the property of GAIAS (Galapagos Academic Institute of Arts & Sciences), across the street from a favored beach of the local sea lion population.
After conducting science experiments in nearby tide pools and learning the local conservation efforts, TGS took to the ocean and hopped the islands of Floreana, Isabela, and Santa Cruz. Students performed plays on evolution after a volcano walk, developed creative writing in fields before enjoying local cuisine, and created a photographic gallery.
Two weeks in the Galapagos and the students learned more about marine life and the politics of conservation than they likely could have anywhere else.
