Students introduce FIGHT at the GEC

THE RECENTLY HELD GLOBAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE (GEC) provided an excellent opportunity for our student body to show their passion for causes, and to actively engage with other proactive individuals around the world. The GEC marked the start of the student-led initiative the World Wide Think Tank, which provided TGS students Paul, Hannah and Yada with a worldwide audience as they detailed their plans to bring around real and meaningful change. The conference also saw the groundwork being laid for a second student initiative, as 11th graders Bailey and Jawed have been working on their own collaboration known as FIGHT.

Aided by a team of students who are helping them develop this project and with art teacher Lee ann Thomas serving as a moderator, Bailey and 10th grader Rebecca presented to an audience comprised of educators and students from around the world, including a group of students in Lithuania who had gathered in their school gymnasium for the presentation. Over the course of an hour, Bailey and Rebecca detailed how FIGHT will encourage people to view cultures other than their own, and to discuss the real world problems that motivate them to seek change. During the conference, Bailey opened up the floor asking what people were fighting for, and the answers proved to be unique and varied. One participant voiced her desire for Esperanto to be included in the list of languages used for global communication, while another voiced their plea for peace in the world’s more volatile regions. All of the participants shared the common thread of bringing change to the entire world.

Still in its fledgling stages, FIGHT aims to provide a unique opportunity for people to be heard through the production of content including videos, blogs and images. Integral to their goal is to share this media in as many languages as possible, so that it can be accessible to the entire world. With a projected launch of March 2013, the FIGHT website is still several months away, but you can get involved today: email fight@tgs.org to learn how you can stand up and FIGHT!
