Buenos Aires is the gateway to Argentina’s geological wonders, which run from the continental spine of the Andes to the polar fingertips of the Tierra del Fuego. During our Argentina term, students had the chance to experience November’s Night of the Museums celebration like a local, staying out at major art galleries, libraries, and theaters until sunrise with THINK Global School faculty members and friends from host school St. Xavier’s College. We took advantage of service learning opportunities at local food banks, learned to dance tango, and attended many soccer and rugby games, including a New Zealand vs. Argentina match that had many of our Kiwi students losing their minds!
We also hopped on a plane and headed northeast to the Mesopotamian province of Misiones, Argentina. While here, science teacher Dan Garvey held a class covering water cycles and biodiversity at the majestic Iguazú Falls National Park, home to a series of over 275 raging waterfalls that are heralded as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Afterward, we visited the Indian reservation of Fortín M’bororé, where members of the indigenous Guarani population discussed the impact of globalization and tourism on their way of life. Students practiced the art of diplomacy while helping the Guaraní people advocate for their land rights, learning valuable lessons about how to negotiate, raise awareness, and make a difference in people’s lives.
