Class of 2024 Spotlight: Three Questions with Sally Smith 🇬🇧

As her senior year comes to a close, Sally S. 🇬🇧 shares thoughts on her time at TGS, including the invaluable life skills she’s learned, how cultures aren’t just found in the places we call home, and her advice for prospective TGS students.

1) How has being part of a diverse and international community influenced your understanding of different cultures and perspectives?

TGS is more than the countries we go to and the academics we complete. In my personal experience, the thing that drives this school the most is the people. Yes, we visit four countries yearly, but these are not the only cultures we experience. Each student gets to share parts of their own culture, whether through sharing their cultural holidays or cooking a dish from their home cuisine. Although it may not seem like it, over your time here, you begin to learn much more about the people around you and their home cultures.

2) How do you think your education at TGS has prepared you for the future?

Learning at TGS is more than memorizing textbooks like in traditional education. At TGS, we have to manage our own learning; therefore, I have become much better at my time management ⏰ than I used to be. By improving this skill, I have become more efficient with my time, and it will be a helpful skill no matter what I do in the future.

I have also learned and practiced budgeting through the weekly meal stipend we receive from the school and have to live off of. This will be useful in the future as I’ll be more aware of my money and spending habits. TGS has pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to push boundaries within myself. I will always be grateful for this, as it has made me more curious, resilient, and open to new things. It means I am more willing to take risks and advocate for my beliefs.

3) What advice would you give to future students considering joining TGS?

For anyone wanting to apply to TGS, my one bit of advice is to be your true, authentic self. Let TGS get to know the real you, and don’t just say things you think the school wants to hear. There is no specific cookie-cutter shape for a TGS student, so don’t be afraid to be different ✨.
