TGS participates in The Walk For Hunger

“The opposite of hungry is not full. It’s healthy.”

-A message seen during The Walk For Hunger

Winter in the New England region of the United States can be a grueling affair, and the constant barrage of storms during the first quarter of 2013 reinforced this fact for us. The blankets of white snow eventually did give way to green, however, as spring inevitably arrived. This pleasant shift in Boston’s climate made for a wonderful atmosphere during Project Bread’s annual Walk For Hunger – a twenty-mile fundraising walk which members of the TGS student base, faculty and onsite staff took part in. Each May, Project Bread holds the Walk For Hunger to raise money for the Massachusetts food banks so that they may provide sustainable, reliable meals throughout their communities. This year, over 30,000 walkers and 1,700 volunteers were able to raise over three million dollars for these community-based programs to assist the hungry.

THINK Global School’s fundraising team, organized by 10th grade student Yuan Yuan, were able to raise over $1,330 in donations for the event – $500 more than the fundraising team’s original goal. This achievement, coupled with the agreeable weather, made the walk itself an extremely gratifying experience for all of the TGS’ers involved. Students walked alongside members of the staff together with their “houses” – a reference to the student communities created as part of our residential life program. Head of School Alun Cooper, who participated in the walk, noted that the lack of “wired” walkers (people wearing headphones) resulted in a cheery and humorous atmosphere. In the end, 11 members of THINK Global School walked the entire twenty miles:

  • Head of School Alun Cooper
  • Onsite Administrator Mary Cooper
  • Math Teacher Ambika Dani
  • Yuan Yuan (Grade 10)
  • Melissa (Grade 10)
  • Hannah (Grade 10)
  • Gawa (Grade 10)
  • Isaac (Grade 10)
  • Joseph (Grade 10)
  • Paul (Grade 9)
  • Tiana (Grade 9)

The good cheer wasn’t limited to just Sunday, however, as the day before the walk occurred, Saturday May 5th, marked the conclusion of THINK Global School’s “Spirit Week.” Spirit Week included the first ever “House Olympics” – a competition pitting the various houses against one another in a series of physical activities. Students competed in numerous events including wheelbarrow and three-legged races before the Westland House was crowned the eventual winner.

The Walk For Hunger was a fitting end to the weekend and a great way to welcome in the changing of the seasons. Additionally, if you’d like to learn more about Project Bread and how you can help, visit their website for more details.
