Read MoreThe students held the first annual THINK Film Fest. Inspired by Creative Arts teacher and Media Specialist, Lindsay Clark, the students were given an assignment to create a video that was 5 seconds to 5 minutes long. The only requirements were that it had to feature Cuenca and tell a story. They were given the opportunity to make all the decisions. Needless to say, they did a fantastic job.
They organized the event, made posters, invited friends from Colegio Aleman Stiehle Cuenca, set up the room, bought snacks and beverages; they even arranged an awards ceremony at the end. There was a panel of judges who screened the films beforehand, which is how the award ceremony winners were chosen. It was endearing to see them handing out flowers to their peers, along with other little funny trinkets. I wasn’t the only one who thoroughly enjoyed spending the night watching their videos.
Storytelling in Cuenca
I knew we had an intelligent bunch, but the creativity and talent that was on display was fantastic. Among the many talented displays was this film by grade 10 students Gijs, Charis, Pema, and Bailey, which incorporated issues learned from Global Studies and the trip to the Amazon rainforest.
After each video, there was a question and answer session for those involved, and they got to explain what they were thinking and trying to portray. There was some serious prep and planning that went into Sunday night’s event, and they pulled it off well.
A ‘stop and repeat’ met the guests upon entering the student residence, and everyone had a great time taking photos on this ‘red carpet’. The enthusiastic reception of this event paved the way for future THINK Film Festivals in future host cities. This could be the start of an exciting tradition!
