McKiller

While enrolled at THINK Global School, students are encouraged to be creative during the course of their studies and travels. When the students document these thoughts, we are often delighted with the results. In his piece “McKiller,” which was created as a project for Lee ann Thomas’ IB Visual Arts class, 11th grade student Isaac F. intertwines events from Indian history with the themes of evil and consumerism to create a startling visual that is left open for the viewer’s interpretation.

The concept of this project arose during my trip to the Ellora and Ajanta caves. There, I learned that when practicing a faith was discontinued, monks would remove the stone faces of important figureheads. This didn’t have an effect on the Buddha statues, seeing as the teachings are currently being followed. To remove the face of Buddha, in place of another, powerfully provokes the idea of an issue with the belief. In place of Buddha is Ronald McDonald. This infers that consumerism, especially in terms of fast food, is the “modern religion.” A third eye is displayed on the forehead of Mr. McDonald. I chose to do this for two reasons: (1) it represents the trickery of globalization, and (2) it adds a reckless, mocking twist on the initial concept of the third eye. The obvious theme of evil is presented in the video. Blood is dripping, knives are carving and sculptures are melting. This is all harmonized with the accelerating, dense audio and left open for the viewer’s interpretation.
