Multicultural Milkshake: a spoken poem

In “Cosmopolitan Greetings,” poet Allen Ginsberg uses snappy sentences to give the reader personal advice. His lack of rhyme scheme and emphasis on stream of consciousness gaps this work from the traditional structure of poetry. I took into consideration the many stylistic devices while writing my emulation “Multicultural Milkshake” for a recent assignment in IB Language & Literature (English). My intention was to give brief advice to students, TGS ones in particular; however, I feel that this can apply to most teenagers. Rebellion, work and emotions are evident topics discussed here, and this poem implies my views on them.

Find time for introspection, for disconnect
If you worry about the future, you won’t
Keep up the good work…
slash notice your present.
You’ll make a difference, so sit down and sign this petition.
Extraordinary students have simple values;
Easy peasy to pleasy these peers.
Teachers are not teachers, if they teach you life and justice.
It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught – that’s justice.
Find your niche or else you will just sit in your room doing:
nothing, procrastination, overthinking, oversleeping, homework.
Freedom is a step outside your door.
Listen to your teacher.
Don’t be too extraordinary.
If you get caught sleeping on the job, raise head slowly and say “in Jesus.”
Cultural immersion is obsolete when
everyone looks out the window.
Apparently,
everyone loves James Franco.
We are cultural immersion if we dare walk the plank.
Let’s try to perfect everything our eyes see… maybe that’s why the human soul is so flawed.
Resilience, synergy, time management, open minded, time management, “In Jesus.”
“You have to be adaptable to where you are”
and so it goes, the poachers ramble quietly.
Fragment minds sink alike.
Aim for perfection, muse the brittle little poets:
Define consonants before explaining.
Copy and paste, copy and … “consonants”.
You are always biased if you only have a single story.

Cut your heart out. Hand it to one another.
