How Does the THINK Global School Curriculum Work?

By the final years of high school, something begins to change.

For many students, curiosity gives way to routine. Learning becomes increasingly focused on completing assignments, preparing for exams, and earning grades. The sense of wonder that comes so naturally in childhood (remember that feeling?) can slowly be replaced by simply getting through the next semester.

Recent research highlights some of the challenges students face in today’s classrooms. According to Gallup’s 2025 Voices of Gen Z report:

What Are the Three Pillars of the THINK Global School Curriculum?

The THINK Global School Curriculum combines high academic expectations with student-driven learning built around three interconnected pillars: global immersion, personal pathways, and wholebeing. Together, these pillars shape every part of the student experience, from the projects they pursue to the people they become.

Global Immersion

Four times a year, for eight weeks at a time, students move to a new country where learning extends beyond the classroom. Local cultures, environments, and communities become part of the curriculum, giving students the opportunity to explore global issues firsthand alongside local experts rather than studying them from a distance.

Personal Pathways

No two students experience the THINK Global School curriculum in exactly the same way. While every student is challenged to meet the same high academic expectations, each student has the flexibility to tailor their learning around their own interests and goals. Through teacher-led modules, personal projects, service learning, and individualized university preparation, students are encouraged to explore what matters most to them while developing the knowledge and skills needed to thrive beyond graduation.

What Is Place-Based Education and How Does TGS Use It?

Global Immersion is more than simply traveling to different countries. It’s about learning with a place, not just in it.

At THINK Global School, every host country becomes part of our curriculum. Students don’t just read about ecosystems, political systems, or cultural traditions in textbooks. Instead, they experience them firsthand by learning from local experts, engaging with communities, and exploring the landscapes, histories, and perspectives that make each location so unique.

So whether investigating biodiversity in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, exploring the origins of democracy on the Pnyx in Athens, or examining the circular economy alongside Mumbai’s dabbawala lunchbox delivery network, TGS students regularly discover that some lessons simply can’t be replicated within classroom walls.

Immersing ourselves in local culture is an essential part of the TGS experience.

This approach, known as place-based education, helps students connect academic concepts to the world around them in meaningful and memorable ways. Rather than asking, “When will I ever use this?” they’re able to see the answer unfold around them every day.

And the research supports that approach. A 2025 review of 44 peer-reviewed studies found that experiential learning consistently improved academic achievement while also strengthening memory, vocabulary, scientific understanding, and other foundational learning skills. The review also found particularly strong benefits for students who had previously struggled in more traditional learning environments.

How Does Project-Based Learning Work at THINK Global School?

At THINK Global School, projects aren’t something students complete after learning. They are how learning happens.

During each eight-week term, students immerse themselves in a teacher-led module centered around a driving question. Rather than memorizing information for quizzes and exams, they investigate complex challenges by working alongside classmates, engaging with local communities, gathering evidence firsthand, and drawing conclusions from multiple perspectives.

Take our current module in Sabah, Malaysia. This term, students are exploring one central question: How is pluralism experienced, negotiated, or challenged in everyday life in Sabah?

To answer this, students are learning to think like researchers by developing ethnographic observation skills and reflecting on how their own identities and experiences influence the way they observe the world around them. From there, they will investigate their question through immersive field experiences across Sabah, visiting Indigenous communities, cultural villages, local markets, places of worship, and the Sabah State Legislative Assembly.

Along the way, they’ll interview religious leaders, elected officials, historians, and local residents to gather diverse perspectives on how identity, belief, and belonging intersect.

Their investigation extends beyond Sabah’s capital city, Kota Kinabalu, through multi-day weXplores into Borneo’s rainforests and along the Kinabatangan River. There, they’ll work alongside conservation experts, observe wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, and spend time with the Orang Sungai community. Later in the term, students will explore Sabah’s cultural diversity through culinary field experiences, preparing traditional dishes alongside local cooks while discovering the stories, histories, and traditions behind each dish.

Throughout the module, students will document their journey through field notes, interviews, and photography as they build toward a journalistic news report and live broadcast, communicating the complexities of pluralism in Sabah to an international audience.

Like every module at THINK Global School, these learning experiences build upon the lessons that came before them, strengthening students’ knowledge, confidence, and curiosity while empowering them to ask sharper questions, weigh evidence, collaborate across perspectives, and communicate complex ideas with clarity and care.

Personal Projects: Following Your Curiosity

One thing that separates THINK Global School from more traditional schools is that students don’t just explore the questions their educators ask — they also pursue the ones they ask themselves.

During each school year, students design and complete personal projects centered around their own interests, whether that’s engineering, filmmaking, entrepreneurship, conservation, music, artificial intelligence, or something entirely unexpected. Working alongside a mentor, they define a goal, create a plan, and challenge themselves to learn something new.

Some projects last only a few weeks, while others evolve over multiple countries as students deepen their expertise. The result isn’t just a finished product: It’s the experience of turning curiosity into action and discovering what they’re capable of when given the freedom to pursue meaningful work.

Capstone Mastery Project: Bringing It All Together

Every project, experience, and challenge at THINK Global School builds toward a single defining moment: the Capstone Mastery Project. Though no two projects are alike, every Capstone Mastery Project is woven with the same thread: sustained inquiry, original thinking, and meaningful learning.

Rather than being assigned a topic, students identify a question or problem they genuinely care about and spend months investigating it in depth. Working with mentors and community experts, they conduct research, gather feedback, refine their ideas, and develop a solution or body of work that reflects both their academic growth and personal passions.

The journey culminates in a formal presentation and defense before a committee, where students share not only what they created but also how their thinking evolved throughout the process. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and confidence they’ve developed during their time at THINK Global School.

More than a graduation requirement, the Capstone Mastery Project is a celebration of what happens when curiosity is pursued with purpose.

Assessment & University Preparation: Measuring Growth for What Comes Next (Whatever that Is!)

A THINK Global School education is designed to prepare students not only for university but for a lifetime of learning. That means assessment is about more than measuring what students know. It’s about documenting how they’ve grown as learners, collaborators, communicators, and problem-solvers.

Throughout their two years at TGS, students are assessed through the projects they complete, the questions they investigate, and the skills they demonstrate. Traditional letter grades and accredited transcripts ensure students meet university admissions requirements, while detailed narrative feedback provides a richer picture of their academic and personal growth.
