Senior Spotlight: Class of 2022 Student Sofia V.

Hi Sofia, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born in Venezuela, but I moved to France when I was 6. I grew up in a small town in the Alps, so I spent a lot of time outdoors hiking, skiing, or biking. I still love being outside and the adventures that often emerge from that. But, I also enjoy a calm day with a good book, some Jasmine tea, and meaningful conversations.

What have been the highlights of your TGS experience, both academically and non-academically?

I have so many! My biggest non-academic highlight is the school huddles. Each week, the entire community gathers to share updates, announcements and express gratitudes or concerns. For an hour, we reflect on our community’s successes and challenges and look for a way to work better together. I always leave the huddles with a deep sense of gratitude to be part of the TGS community, and I have a clearer idea of what actions I can take for others.

Academically, my favorite thing is the process portfolio. For every project at TGS, you need to create a portfolio showcasing the process of growth, investigation of a topic, and development of skills. The portfolio is usually more important than the final product during the evaluation step. I’ve found that emphasizing the process allows me to dig deeper into my project and focus on its purpose.

Do you have a favorite teacher-led module or personal project that you’ve worked on?

I’m currently working on my mastery project with Marily, a fellow student from Mexico. The goal of a mastery project is to create something new, so we’re building a fashion brand that aims to raise awareness about social movement groups in Latin America artistically. I’m excited to learn more about fashion design, Latin America’s social movements groups, and to be working with a friend.

What has been your favorite travel experience so far? Is there a place you would like to visit, either with TGS or on your own?

I remember reading these questions back when I applied, and I still can’t believe I’m answering them now!

There isn’t a specific personality type that automatically gets accepted into TGS, so don’t try to fit in or be a certain way. Showcase your personality and life experiences humbly. Ask for help if you need it, and don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s a long process, but you have so much support. Whatever happens, remember there are great things ahead. Good luck!!
