HUNGER IS AN IMMENSE ISSUE affecting people in both the United States and the rest of the world. Every 3 seconds, a child dies from hunger-related causes. This past Friday, as a way to act locally on this global issue, the students and staff at THINK Global School participated in the A Day of Hunger initiative.
A Day of Hunger helped our students and staff to empathize with the millions of people who deal with the feeling of hunger every day. As a show of support, we chose not to eat anything when we woke up in the morning or in the afternoon until classes had concluded. This was also a way for us to raise money for Project Bread, an organization dedicated to alleviating hunger in Massachusetts. Every year, they put on an event called The Walk for Hunger, which many TGS members are participating in during our Boston term. Over the course of the 20 mile walk, participants raise awareness about hunger while walking on behalf of sponsors. The 2012 Walk for Hunger was a great success, with 43,000 people coming together to raise $3.6 million.
Because all 51 of us gave up our $10 lunches on Friday, we were able to raise and donate $510 to Project Bread. This money will go on to provide more than 25 families with a hot, nutritious dinner and a week’s worth of groceries at a weekly supper program.
I hope that my fellow students and the participating staff members took away something from A Day of Hunger, and I am so glad that TGS gave back to the community where we have resided for the past few months.
If you would like to sponsor TGS in The Walk for Hunger, we’d really appreciate it!
