This highly traditional society is turning towards the future
It has been fifty years since the dawn of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, and while the Great Leap Forward proved to be anything but, in many ways China now finds itself the envy of the developed world.
Students live in the sprawling ultramodern city of Shanghai during their time here, where they’ll find an incredible diversity of people to interact with, an impressive range of architecture to admire, and endless marketplaces, museums, food stalls, and landmarks to explore.
Students also visit cities and provinces where antiquity and tradition still reign, and the concept of modernity is limited to the tech that resides in their pockets and backpacks. In previous terms, students have learned the process of Longjin tea roasting firsthand, practiced martial arts and Chan Buddhism at a Shaolin temple, and ventured into China’s centuries-old Hakka walled villages, where ancient customs and beliefs are still practiced today.

ON HIS CHINA TERM
“China was completely unlike anywhere I’ve been. It beat my expectations, and was one of the coolest terms. Coming from the US, which just turned 150, it was mind boggling to be in a place with buildings thousands of years old, and a history even older.”

Tattooing is the most misunderstood art form in Japan today. Greetings TGS, Long time reader, first time blogger here. Some of you may have noticed that I can be a little patriotic... My friends in Abu Dhabi used to joke that New Zealand has "small country" syndrome because it is always determined to be the best. I think like the Canadians, we are determined not to be seen as the same as our more populated neighbours. With that in mind...
