Hot dogs and history in the cradle of the American Revolution
With a prominent role in the settling and formation of the United States, Boston remains a hotbed of political activity to this day. Home to dozens of colleges and universities, it’s also a mecca for intellectuals of all stripes: refugees and rebels, activists and industrialists, philosophers and physicists, among so many others.
We found an ideal temporary home with the British School of Boston and quickly settled into an American way of life, enjoying Red Sox games and strolls along the Charles River. Our proximity to renowned educational institutions such as Harvard University allowed us to attend lectures by Al Gore and access multiple museums and libraries.
On a five-day excursion to Washington, D.C., we brushed up on five centuries worth of news and journalism history at the massive Newseum, spoke with Holocaust survivor Jacqueline Birn at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and visited the circular Hirshorn Museum to view Ai Weiwei’s “According to What?” exhibit, which gave us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of his political motives. Virginia’s Arlington Cemetery provided a powerful reminder of those who have given their lives in the name of American freedom and set the stage for our tribute to America’s founding fathers through visits to The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The Lincoln Memorial, and The Washington Monument. We also visited New York City, where we visited museums, toured the diverse neighborhoods, and even took in a comedy show.
