Before joining TGS, I was fortunate to have amazing opportunities teaching chemistry, physics, and math in Spain, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, USA, and Colombia. These schools also gave me the chance to coach basketball, organize outdoor trips, and lead service-learning opportunities in Colombia, Peru, Thailand, Spain, and South Africa (I am grateful for these unforgettable experiences with students!). Before and between these schools, I worked organizing corporate events in Colombia, then worked for the Olympic Committee, and later for a really interesting engineering company.
In terms of my personal background, my passports and soul are shared by my three home countries: Colombia, Spain, and the U.S.A. As many also know, it’s incredible and at the same time confusing to be a cultural mix, and depending on the day, the answer to “Where are you from?” can change.
Education must be updated, and TGS clearly gets this. Education must be on-site and experiential, with less emphasis on traditional testing. Prioritizing project-based learning and collaboration leads to greater engagement, purpose, and deeper learning. Clearly, not all educational systems can be as dynamic and mobile as TGS, but the philosophy behind it is applicable and certainly the way forward. And where possible, when the learning environment and infrastructure allows for service learning to be a part of the education process, it´s a true win-win.
This one is easy to answer, but difficult to achieve: equal educational opportunities for all across all skill sets, complemented with real life skills like how to treat people, work together, solve conflict, choose a career, and find balance. It’s idealistic, but it could solve so many issues. There are so many kids and adults in the world thirsty for an opportunity to learn, grow and do right.
I wish it were all of them! At the moment, I’m really feeling Compassion, Meraki, and Ubuntu. If we sincerely do our best, consider others, and contribute to our community, things should work out. The harder we work, the luckier we´ll be.
Playing GeoGuessr makes one want to go everywhere! Kyrgyzstan, Cabo Verde, Madagascar, Philippines, Tokyo, New Zealand….but honestly, there are so many places with amazing landscapes, food, culture, wildlife, markets, music, language, everything!
